A new feasibility study to utilize the Oluvil Port

The Ministerial Consultative Committee on Aquatic Resources and Marine Resources Affairs, chaired by Mr. Ramalingam Chandrasekhar, announced at a recent meeting in Parliament that a future decision will be taken on how the Oluvil Port can be utilized.

The Minister stated that new feasibility studies will be conducted to correct the damage caused by the construction of the Oluvil Port without conducting proper studies, and future plans will be prepared based on that, the Minister stated.

In addition, to meet the need for a fishing port in the Eastern Province, the Deputy Minister stated that plans have been made to convert the fishing port in the Valachchenai area into a large fishing port with new facilities in 2026 and to establish a factory to produce ice required for the fishing industry in that area.

Furthermore, in response to a question from the Opposition Leader regarding the pension system for fishermen, the Deputy Minister stated that a new pension system will be established for the entire fishing community in this country from November 21st.
