Four, including a female, were arrested over an assault on a bus driver in Kandy

The Kandy Police have arrested four people for assaulting a bus driver who was transporting school children in the Hanthana area of Kandy on Friday (25), police said.

The suspects arrested are aged 21, 26 and 27, while the female suspect is 38. All the suspects are residents of Kandy, the police added.

The private bus transporting a group of school children and teachers from Anuradhapura to visit the Hanthana mountain range collided with a three-wheeler.

Following the accident, a group of people attacked the bus driver.

The injured driver was later admitted to hospital. Police said the group continued the attack despite the teachers and parents on the bus asking people not to attack the driver.

Accordingly, the police have arrested three men and one woman in connection with the assault.

The arrested suspects were produced before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court yesterday (26). The court ordered the release of the suspect on bail.

The Magistrate also ordered the three suspects to be remanded until tomorrow (28).

Further investigations into the incident are being conducted by the Kandy Police.
