W. M. Athula Thilakaratne, who was illegally released from the court under the misleading Presidential Amnesty, has been sentenced to 7 years of rigorous imprisonment by Anuradhapura High Court Judge Dr. Nalin de Hewawasam.
This is in relation to two charges about taking (theft) of money worth Rs. 3.5 million deposited in an account by a doctor to a well-known financial institution tricking him by posing as a manager of that financial institution.
Accordingly, the High Court Judge, who sentenced the accused W. M. Athula Thilakaratne to five years of rigorous imprisonment for the charge of forging a document used to withdraw money from a bank and obtaining the money, imposed a further two years of rigorous imprisonment on the charge of misappropriation.
In addition, the defendant was also ordered to pay compensation of Rs. 4 million in cash to the plaintiff doctor in this case.
